Misplaced outrage

Misplaced outrage – posted on IndyMedia SA

Africa Action today expressed outrage at the misplaced priorities of
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during her first visit to
Sudan. This morning’s fracas between Sudanese security officers and
Rice’s entourage has generated greater attention and indignation from
U.S. officials and international media than has the ongoing genocide in
that country that has claimed more than 400,000 lives in the past two
years.

Unable to focus on the people of Darfur even for one brief visit to Sudan, Ms Rice and most of the world’s media have also missed the fact that forty prisoners from Darfur have started a hunger strike.

The prisoners have been locked up for over two years without any formal charges or even accusations. They’ve never seen a judge in all that time. Their situation is a reflection of that in the region from which they come – Darfur.
