Ali Farka Toure: 1939 – 2006

We have lost one of Africa’s greatest ever musiciansAli Farka Toure who passed away this week after a long battle with cancer.  Toure brought the blues of Mali to the world but never forgot his home and spent much of the last 20 years in Mali.

Nothing I can say will do him  justice.  I remember the night my friend Judy and I saw him in London many years ago – I cannot even remember where it was. But we were both hooked from that day.    Since then his music has been part of my life and has followed  me across oceans and always brought me back home to Africa.

You will be missed so much but today I will celebrate your life through your music – Rest in Peace.

  1. The word ‘great’ is overused but that truly applies to him.

  2. Yes it is – but when you substitute it for some other word it sounds pretentious – I travel quite a bit to Morocco and there is never a town or village that is not playing Ali Farka Toure – in Essaouria every CD shop is playing either him or Youssou N’dour. I hope to get to the Gnaoua festival this year and I know he is bound to be remembered and celebrated by all the musicians and people.
