Black Looks - Including an African LGBTIQ+ Archive

Goodbye SA

Tonight I leave South Africa after almost 4 weeks. My intention was to write a whole thesis on my experience but am too tired so all thats left are a few more photos. Unfortunately I cannot find the ones from my last evening (which included a daring 10 minute walk from the pub/resturant to the house instead of taking a taxi!) so they must have been deleted by accident.

Victor, Monique and Me

Cool guy at the vegetable market

I would like to name some special people for me personally: All those who I interviewed (will be published in the coming weeks) AND In Joburg – Victor and Monique, Pumla and Busi, Wendy and Musa, all the people at FEW and BTM and Rista; In Cape Town, Mandisa, Benjamin and most especially Gabrielle. Thanks to you all and I will be back sooner than later!

When it is over, I don’t want to wonder if I have made my life something particular, and real.
I don’t want to find myself sighing and frightened,
Or full of argument.
I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world.

  1. Hi Sokari,
Thanks for the shout out. It was wonderful to make your acquaintance, and that of victor and monique. Will definitely screw up the courage to visit the women’s jail. Look after the back and hope to see you back soon.

  2. Aha Sokari, I just discovered Mary Oliver recently too – she keeps popping up in my life – now that’s synchronicity between us – go well home to Spain, well you are there already but stay well there is an enormous energy of female love for you here in SA
