Thankfully the Gallery has chosen to leave all the photographic exhibits from 2005 and 2006 online. Here’s another one from MIKHAEL SUBOTZKY
To follow through with the two posts on crime yesterday by myself and Kameelah, Subotzky has chosen to focus much of his work on prisons and prisoners. He
“examines issues surrounding the correctional services system within a broad socio political and historical context. South African prisons have been brutal instruments of racism and oppression under colonialism and the Apartheid regime……………………”.
South Africa has one of the highest rates of incarceration in the world “157,000 prisoners in a space for 113,000” and certainly rehabilitation is not part of the system.
You can see a number of his exhibitions on his website
For further information, Angela Davis has written much on the need to dismantle the “Prison Industrial Complex”
