Panhandling for Reparations

Radical artist, damali ayo, is organizing the National Day of Panhandling for Reparations on October 10, 2007.

–“NATIONAL DAY OF PANHANDLING FOR REPARATIONS is coming this Fall! October 10, 2007

People of all races across the United States will take an hour or two to collect reparations in the form of money from white Americans for the enslavement and free-labor of Africans and African Americans during the establishment and economic rise of this country. This money will be immediately paid out to black passersby. Both parties will be offered a receipt. We will do this to offer a convenient opportunity for American citizens to acknowledge, apologize and compensate the unpaid labor of African Americans, the travesty of slavery, and the rightful due of reparations.

This’ll go over well in the Southern states.

is this serious? this is a joke, right?

Oh for the love that all that is sacred. YOU weren’t in slavery people from hundreds of years ago were. ME as a caucasion woman DID NOT put them in slavary, some idiots that I don’t even know did. I don’t owe you anything. Though if we are going to give money to people, lets give even more to the Jews. They were treated worse then the slaves. Then what about the Irish? The Native Americans? They all were treated like crap but I don’t see them getting anything. This is not equality. This is treating one race extra special for something that they didn’t live through.

How deliciously demeaning. Though I highly doubt delicious would be a right adjective as demeaning would suffice enough in itself.

Though I wonder where this sense of entitlement comes from, especially from this act? Perhaps, as one could guess it comes from the woefully ignorent thought that at one point ALL white people had owned slaves. However, that’s simply not the case.

My family on my mothers side is descended from Irish Potatoe Farmers in the early 1900’s who came from (you guessed it) Ireland durin the Potatoe Famine. I’m sure you know your history well enough, since that was after the emancipation proclamation.

But if you also know your history, you’ll know well that the Irish for the first half of the 20th century were viewed as simple, violent, abusive, and often times drunk. Indeed many of the same qualities as black people viewedduring the same time frame. Just like there were signs that stated “No Colored People” there were signs that read “No Irish Need Apply”. In fact, there’s a nice little tune to go along with that phrase.

Because of this, should I demand reparations from those with English descent for the way my Great, Great Grandparents were treated and even to some extent my Great Grandfather who’s still among us at 82 years old?

No, that would be insanity and not because I’m white or some Plastic Paddy, but because I know better and realize that that has happened in an earlier chapter of American History to a generation who have been dead for quite some time.

Even my God-Father, who happens to be Black (bless his soul) considers this exercise futile, unnecessary, and completly downplay’s any actual cases of true racism that faces Black America today. Of course, after several beers and the phrase “sensationalistic whore” we can sort of leave out the rest of his argument on the matter.

Though then again, I do hope this happens somewhere within North Eastern Indiana, as I would like to be a participant, albeit a passive participant. Should anyone demean themselves with this trite act I can equally demean them with a paltry stick of gum as my contribution, no longer having to owe anyone anything.
