I think of water and its significance to Blackness, to the Africas. The tens of thousands of enslaved women, men and children, thrown to the Atlantic; the thousands drowned in crossings, forced from their homes to die of hope in the Mediterranean sea; those enslaved who chose to walk into the ocean and for whom death was the way back home and ultimately freedom. But water is also healing. The waters of Osun in Nigeria and Sodo in Haiti cleanse and heal, throw away the pains of the past so we can move into the dreams of future.
